Special Events in Other Places
Wisconsin Book Festival (Madison)
Sept. 29-Oct. 3
Each year the Wisconsin Book Festival brings great writers to Madison for readings and talks. For the past four years, we’ve partnered with the Wisconsin Humanities Council to attract and highlight writers who focus on our relationship to the land. In the past, the Aldo Leopold Foundation has helped to bring Wendell Berry, David Orr, Terry Tempest Williams, Rick Bass, and Andy Revkin to the festival. This year’s speakers will be announced on wisconsinbookfestival.org when the line-up is confirmed!

Brown Bag Seminars
Thoughout the year, ALF will offer periodic brownbag seminars from 12-1:30pm on weekdays. Brown Bags will cover a variety of conservation-related topics, taking advantage of scholars who are in the area or timely events. Brown Bag seminars will be advertised in our local area, and will also be posted here as they are scheduled. Bring a lunch and join us for a lively discussion!
John Muir the Joyful Conservationist/Writer
Thursday, July 8th, 12:00-1:30pm
With Amy Lou Jenkins
Explore the development of the conservation ethics of John Muir from boyhood to old age; from farmer to political activist; from cultural hermit to acclaimed writer, from machinist to naturalist. His brand of environmentalism stands in concert with Aldo Leopold. Muir had little formal education in literature, but he was a student of writing, drawn especially to the discussions of Transcendentalism, where God was found each individual and in nature. His writing talents continued to develop as he wrote journal entries and letters, still unaware that he was writing books along the way. Muir was not a wanderer his entire life. He made accommodations because he also sought company and relationships. His writing, while out of style to the mind of those who favor more cynical works, never the less inspired a nation to value wilderness. Amy Lou will also read selections related to Muir and Leopold from her new book, Every Natural Fact: Five Seasons of Open-Air Parenting. Bring a bag lunch along and enjoy the 1 hour presentation followed by questions and discussion. This program is free and open to the public. Amy Lou Jenkins is the author of Every Natural Fact and has taught writing at Carroll University and at writing seminars and workshops. She's an active author and freelance writer specializing in articles and essays related to the environment, parenting, and health. She holds a BSN from Alverno College and an MFA in literature and writing from Bennington College.

Shen Hou, a professor of environmental history at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
